Mallorca Sees Significant Rise in Criminal Activity

Mallorca has experienced a notable surge in criminal activity, with offences on the island rising by more than 10 percent in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in the previous year. This increase contributes to a broader trend across the Balearic Islands, where overall criminal offences saw a 7.9 percent rise, according to the Ministry of the Interior's Balance of Criminality Report.

The island of Mallorca accounted for 32,812 of the 40,494 total offences recorded in the Balearics during the first six months of 2026. The capital, Palma, registered the highest number of offences, with an increase of approximately 10 percent to 18,482.

While cybercrime saw a decrease of 5.8 percent, conventional crime climbed by 11 percent, resulting in over 34,000 offences. The report also indicated a 15.2 percent rise in sexual offences across the Balearics. Robberies involving violence or threats increased by 9.8 percent to 716, and thefts rose by 8.8 percent to 11,802. Vehicle thefts also saw an increase.

Other islands in the Balearic chain experienced varying trends. Formentera saw a 7.5 percent increase in criminal activity, reaching 331 offences, while Ibiza experienced a slight uptick of 0.4 percent. In contrast, Menorca reported a decrease in crime, with an 8 percent drop.

Recent months have seen several high-profile crime reports from Mallorca. Earlier in the summer, a British woman was reportedly abducted and sexually assaulted while walking back to her hotel. In another incident, a masseur was accused of sexually assaulting a pregnant British tourist during a massage session at her hotel in July.
