Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Shakes Southern Peru Coast
Authorities report no damage or casualties following the tremor.
A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck a coastal area of southern Peru on Sunday, the United States Geological Survey reported. Local residents experienced shaking described as light to moderate, but authorities have confirmed there was no damage or casualties.
The earthquake occurred at 8:43 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located 18 kilometers (11 miles) southeast of the city of Camaná in the department of Arequipa. The tremor's depth was recorded at 44.9 kilometers (28 miles).
Peru's Emergency Operations Center stated on social media that tsunami risks were ruled out and that assessments of vulnerable areas were underway. The country lies along the "Ring of Fire," a zone known for frequent seismic activity due to its extensive network of volcanoes and fault lines around the Pacific Basin.
This seismic event follows other recent earthquakes in the region. In August, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in the Peruvian Andes resulted in injuries and damage to homes, health centers, and schools. In July, a 5.5-magnitude quake in the Junín region caused six deaths and 30 injuries. Additionally, a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Panama on Friday, injuring 27 people.
