Three people sustained serious injuries in two separate machete attacks in Melbourne over the weekend, despite laws banning such weapons having been in place for a year.

The incidents occurred near the intersection of Elizabeth and Flinders Streets in the city center. Details regarding the circumstances of the attacks and the conditions of the injured parties were not immediately available, beyond that the injuries were serious.

The attacks have prompted questions about the enforcement and efficacy of the ban on machetes, which was introduced following a previous surge in weapon-related violence. Authorities have yet to comment on whether the ban will be reviewed or if additional measures will be implemented in response to these latest incidents.
