Louvre Museum Closed Amid Violent Protests in Paris

The Louvre Museum, a top global tourist destination, has closed its entrances after protesters barricaded the museum. The closure on Monday followed a weekend of widespread riots and demonstrations across Paris and France.

Students from the École du Louvre organized the blockade, preventing visitors from accessing the iconic glass pyramid and the Carrousel du Louvre and Passage Richelieu entrances. The museum announced the closure on X, formerly Twitter, citing "student strikes" and apologizing for the inconvenience. No reopening time was immediately provided.

The disruption comes amid a backdrop of nationwide unrest, fueled by high living costs and recent police actions. According to the Associated Press, the barricades forced museum management to turn away thousands of expected visitors.

Beyond the Louvre, other major Parisian landmarks have been significantly impacted. The Eiffel Tower experienced a full-day closure due to a strike by its employees protesting limitations placed on female staff members during a private delegation's visit. Additionally, the Chateau de Versailles had to close its interior spaces on October 6 due to a power outage in the surrounding area.

These recent events add to a history of operational challenges at prominent French cultural sites. In September 2025, institutions like the Musee d'Orsay and the Arc de Triomphe faced temporary closures because of staff shortages and strikes related to proposed government spending cuts.

Nationwide protests have led to significant unrest, with hundreds of businesses reportedly damaged and nearly 2,400 arrests made over the weekend. The demonstrations and increased security measures have also complicated travel for international visitors navigating the city.
