London Zoo Animals Receive Halloween Treats

London Zoo's animal residents received a festive surprise this Halloween with specially prepared treats designed to stimulate their natural behaviors. Pumpkins filled with favorite foods were distributed throughout various enclosures, offering an enrichment activity for the animals.

This year's Halloween festivities coincide with the zoo's ongoing celebration of its 200th anniversary. London Zoo, located in Regent's Park, annually transforms into a seasonal attraction during October.

Among the recipients were Humboldt penguins, who were presented with fish served on pumpkin platters. The zoo's western lowland gorillas explored a "pumpkin patch" containing pumpkins, peppers, and lettuce.

Over the years, London Zoo has provided similar Halloween-themed enrichment for a variety of species, including Sumatran tigers, okapis, Komodo dragons, and Galapagos tortoises. These activities are designed to challenge the animals' foraging skills.

Daniel Simmonds, Animal Operations Manager at London Zoo, highlighted the educational and engaging aspect of these events. "Halloween gives our zookeepers a great opportunity to come up with new seasonal ways to encourage our animals' natural instincts and skills – laying down scent trails leading to tasty pumpkins, or hiding their food for foraging inside the carved creations," Simmonds stated.
