Gangs exploited the cover of Halloween festivities to commit robberies, burglaries, and knife crimes across northwest London during a heightened police operation dubbed "Operation Moonshield." The Metropolitan Police intensified efforts to curb violent offenses during one of the busiest crime periods of the year, with personal robberies in the sector falling by over 50% in the months leading up to the operation.

During a single night of patrols, officers responded to a variety of incidents, including a knife-related assault near Wembley Stadium where a man allegedly threatened another driver with a large knife after a traffic collision. This incident led to arrests for possession of a knife, assault, and criminal damage. Police noted that machetes and other weapons are increasingly seen among criminal groups, and that the period around Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night consistently sees a seasonal spike in violent crime due to darker nights and increased pedestrian activity.

Throughout the operation, authorities made four arrests for offenses including rape, theft, and possession of a knife. Thirteen stop searches were also conducted. One patrol encountered a man who was Tasered for failing to cooperate, leading to arrests for obstruction of search and breach of bail. Another incident involved a suspected house burglary, where a rear door was found smashed, though the suspect had already fled before police could apprehend them.

Police also focused on individuals using high-powered electric bikes, often associated with street crime, in the vicinity of a Macklemore concert at Wembley Stadium. A traffic stop later in the night resulted in the discovery of a knife and drugs in a vehicle, with the driver facing charges after initially failing to stop for officers. Inspector Pete Self of the Met Police described the operation as successful in its aim to suppress violent crime, noting that such efforts are ongoing to counter the seasonal increase.

Data from earlier in the year indicated a significant rise in violent assaults in London since 2016, with increases also reported in theft, sexual offenses, and drug-related crimes. Operation Moonshield aimed to directly address and reduce violent robbery calls through visible suppression tactics.
