Services on the London Underground remained severely disrupted on Monday as a Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) strike entered its second day, with operators warning of little or no service across most lines.
Members of the RMT began rolling walkouts on Sunday and are staging further action through Thursday in a dispute over pay and working conditions. Transport for London (TfL) said different parts of the union membership are walking out on different days, producing near-complete cancellations on many Tube lines. The Elizabeth line and London Overground are running but are expected to be much busier than usual as passengers seek alternatives.
TfL urged passengers to check its website for the latest information on which lines are affected and to consider alternative travel arrangements where possible. The authority cautioned that services scheduled to operate could still be delayed or cancelled at short notice and warned of significant crowding on the lines that remain open.
The strike is part of a routine pattern of rolling industrial action in which groups of workers take leave on different days to extend the period of disruption. On Monday, TfL said there was little or no service across the majority of the Underground network due to the staggered walkouts.
Commuters travelling into central London were advised to expect longer journeys, to allow extra time, and to consider other forms of transport such as buses, cycling or walking for short trips. Some longer-distance rail and bus services that connect with the capital will also experience heavier passenger volumes than usual.
RMT members attributed the action to unresolved talks over pay and conditions, saying previous rounds of negotiations had not delivered an acceptable settlement. TfL and other employers have said they remain in discussions with unions but have not announced a resolution.
The strike is scheduled to continue through Thursday, and officials have said further disruption could follow if a deal is not reached. Passengers are advised to consult TfL's live updates before travelling and to expect altered timetables across the capital for the remainder of the week.
