Lithium-ion Battery Fire Kills Mother and Three Children in UK
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service identifies a lithium-ion battery as the cause of a blaze that rapidly spread through a home.
A mother and her three children died in a house fire in Bootle, Merseyside, that was caused by a lithium-ion battery, the fire service has confirmed. Elisha Brabin, 36, and her children, Leo, 16, Ellis, eight, and Prudence, seven, perished in the blaze.
The fire occurred in the early hours of September 22 at a semi-detached property on Stone Square. Firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 03:45 BST, with six fire engines responding to the incident at its height. Four individuals, showing no signs of life, were discovered in an upstairs bedroom.
An investigation conducted by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) in conjunction with Merseyside Police concluded that an electrical event linked to a lithium-ion battery was the source of the fire. These batteries are commonly used in devices such as e-bikes and e-scooters.
"This tragedy highlights the very real risks posed by lithium-ion batteries, which we confirmed as the source of the fire," an MFRS statement said, emphasizing the dangers associated with the technology.
