Lisbon Named Europe's Leading Cruise Destination for 2026

Lisbon has been awarded the title of Europe's Leading Cruise Destination for 2026 by the World Travel Awards, marking its return to the top spot after a three-year tenure by Dubrovnik. This accolade highlights the city's enduring appeal as a sun-soaked European getaway, known for its iconic yellow trams, pastel de nata, and scenic River Tagus views.

The Portuguese capital's modern cruise port, designed by architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça, has become a significant draw for international travelers. In August 2026 alone, Lisbon welcomed a record 86,322 cruise passengers and hosted 33 port calls, according to Cruise Europe. This surge underscores the city's growing popularity as an accessible gateway to a captivating European capital.

A key factor in Lisbon's success is the proximity of its cruise terminal to major attractions. Passengers can easily walk from the waterfront to the historic Alfama district, a neighborhood characterized by its narrow, cobbled streets, traditional eateries, and landmarks such as Lisbon Cathedral and the 16th-century Monastery of São Vicente de Fora.

Lisbon offers pleasant weather for much of the year, with August temperatures typically reaching around 28C (82F). Even in autumn, the city can experience heatwaves, with highs of 36C (97F) recorded recently. The city also remains vibrant in winter, featuring light displays and Christmas markets.

This award signifies Lisbon's first time holding the title since 2022, with Dubrovnik having held it from 2023 to 2025. Lisbon has a strong history with the World Travel Awards, having previously been recognized as Europe's Leading Cruise Port in 2023, 2022, and 2021, accumulating a total of 15 awards since 2009.

In contrast, Dubrovnik, recognized this year as Europe's Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination, welcomed 423 cruise ships and 571,134 passengers in the first nine months of 2026. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town, encircled by ancient walls, remains a significant tourist draw.

Past recipients of the Europe's Leading Cruise Destination award include Venice in 2019 and Saint Petersburg in 2018. Izmir held the title in 2011, 2012, and 2013, while Copenhagen was recognized from 2004 to 2007 and again in 2010.
