Buckingham Palace has installed new electric vehicle (EV) charging points, distinguished by their livery green color and the monarch's cypher, as part of King Charles's ongoing efforts to transition the royal fleet to electric power.

These custom chargers, recently placed in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace and also deployed at other royal estates including Windsor and Sandringham, represent a significant step towards electrifying the royal household's motor fleet. The initiative was detailed by Keeper of the Privy Purse James Chalmers as part of the annual Sovereign Grant review.

This move aligns with the King's long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability. As Prince of Wales, he famously converted his Aston Martin to run on bioethical fuel derived from waste products and was an early adopter of EVs, personally leasing a Jaguar I-Pace. He has also been seen using a Lotus Eletre EV for duties at the Sandringham Estate.

The broader royal fleet now comprises at least half electric, hybrid, or biofuel-powered vehicles. Measures to enhance sustainability extend to aviation, with the installation of sustainable aviation fuel tanks at RAF Odiham and RAF Northolt to facilitate the increased use of eco-friendly fuel for royal flights, particularly helicopters.

These efforts have contributed to a six percent reduction in the royal household's year-on-year carbon emissions, with a target of zero carbon emissions by 2040. The palace acknowledges that some historic vehicles, such as the State Bentleys, may present challenges for full electrification due to their size and specifications, but these have been converted to run on bioethanol fuel.

The King's initiative aims for a majority electric vehicle fleet.

Separately, recent reports indicated that King Charles and Queen Camilla will not be permanently relocating to Buckingham Palace following its £369 million refurbishment, opting instead to continue residing at Clarence House. Royal officials have stressed that Buckingham Palace will remain the operational and symbolic center of the monarchy, hosting meetings and official engagements.
