King Charles III and Prince Harry met for a private tea at Clarence House on Wednesday in their first one-on-one encounter in roughly 19 months, Buckingham Palace and a spokesman for the Duke of Sussex confirmed.

The meeting, described in a report by the Daily Mail as lasting 54 minutes, took place in the late afternoon after the king returned from Balmoral. Both the palace and Harry's representative issued identical short statements confirming the private meeting and declined to provide further details about its content.

According to the Daily Mail account, Charles arrived at Clarence House at about 4 p.m. after flying from Balmoral to RAF Northolt. The report said the king had scheduled audiences in London that dovetailed with routine cancer treatment he has been receiving. Prince Harry was said to have arrived at 5:20 p.m., reportedly accompanied by two U.S. bodyguards, and to have left at about 6:14 p.m. Palace officials confirmed only that the meeting had taken place.

The newspaper report and royal sources cited by it said Harry had spent part of the afternoon carrying out engagements in London, including the in-person presentation of an MBE to Holocaust campaigner Manfred Goldberg and a later reception for his Invictus Games organisation. Organisers told reporters that the Invictus reception, originally scheduled for 6 p.m., was delayed to 6:45 p.m., which the Daily Mail said allowed time for the Clarence House meeting to be added to Harry's diary.

The brief, private nature of the encounter and the lack of public comment from both sides reflect longstanding tensions within the royal family. The meeting follows a string of public disputes between the prince and other family members, including broadcast interviews, documentaries and a memoir that criticised royal life and relatives. Harry also pursued legal action over the withdrawal of publicly funded Metropolitan Police protection when he was in the U.K.; the case concluded in April, with media reports saying he lost his challenge.

Buckingham Palace has previously said details of family conversations are private. In February of the previous year, palace officials publicly disclosed that the king had been diagnosed with cancer; at that time, reports said Harry flew to London and met Charles for a brief visit as the monarch was preparing to travel to Sandringham.

The meeting at Clarence House did not include other senior royals. Prince William, the heir apparent, was on an engagement in Cardiff marking World Suicide Prevention Day and visiting a new mental health hub, royal engagements lists showed. The relationship between the two brothers has been publicly strained in recent years and, according to multiple reports, the two have not spoken for some time.

Aides and commentators have described the king as personally hurt by the family's public disputes but also as a figure who values reconciliation. The Daily Mail quoted unnamed insiders who characterised the Clarence House meeting as a tentative opening of communication between father and son. Palace spokespeople have not provided confirmation of those characterisations.

Royal officials have said that the king plans to return to Balmoral following his engagements in London and will be in the capital again next week for scheduled public events. Both the palace and representatives for Harry have asked for privacy regarding the private discussion at Clarence House and offered no indication of further meetings or any agreements reached during the encounter.

Observers will be watching whether the meeting leads to further contact between the monarch and the Duke of Sussex and whether it affects broader relations within the royal family, including between Harry and his brother. For now, official statements remain limited to confirming that the private tea took place and that no additional comment would be made.
