Kenya Highway Crash Kills 22, Weeks After Similar Fatal Accident
At least 22 people died when a bus collided with a truck on a major Kenyan highway, a crash that occurred just three weeks after another fatal incident on the same route.
A bus collided with a truck on Kenya’s main highway on Sunday, killing at least 22 people, according to police.
The collision occurred just three weeks after 17 people died in a separate accident along the same highway, which connects the capital, Nairobi, with the coastal city of Mombasa.
Several other individuals were injured in the Sunday morning crash and are receiving medical treatment, police stated.
The passengers were reportedly returning from a funeral at the time of the incident. Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif indicated that the number of fatalities could increase.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are not yet clear. Speeding and poor road conditions have been identified in the past as contributing factors to road accidents in Kenya. The stretch of highway where Sunday’s crash occurred is designated as an “accident black spot” by Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority, which has previously recommended measures to address safety concerns in the area.
