Kenya Ebola Cases Rise to 8; No Community Transmission Reported

Kenya's Ebola cases increased to eight on Sunday after an additional positive test was recorded from an individual in quarantine who had been identified as a contact of the initial patient. Health officials confirmed there has been no community transmission of the virus.

The eighth case involved a 49-year-old patient attendant who cared for the first Ebola patient, a Kenyan man who died at Nairobi Hospital on October 5, two days after arriving in the country from Congo via Uganda. Health Ministry Director-General Dr. Patrick Amoth stated that individuals in quarantine are being tested if they develop symptoms. The other six patients are reported to be in stable condition and receiving supportive treatment.

Following the death of the first patient, approximately 130 contacts, including healthcare workers, were identified. Of these, 128 remain under quarantine. Ebola is highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, such as blood and vomit, or through contact with contaminated materials like bedding and clothing. The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently experiencing its deadliest Ebola outbreak, with over 4,000 reported deaths since May.

The first case in Kenya involved a 40-year-old man who had traveled from Congo, passing through Uganda before arriving in Kenya on October 3. He was driven to the hospital by a relative and died on October 5. Among the positive cases, three are close relatives of the first patient, and three are health workers.

Neighboring Tanzania has implemented enhanced border screenings, including mandatory health declarations and 21-day monitoring for travelers arriving from high-risk countries. Kenya has also strengthened its screening measures and established an emergency hotline for individuals who suspect contact with an Ebola patient or are experiencing symptoms. The country has designated a specific gate at Nairobi's main airport for all flights originating from 10 countries identified as being at the center of the Ebola outbreak.
