Kenya Confirms Third Ebola Case, a Relative of Deceased Patient

Kenya's Ministry of Health has confirmed a third positive Ebola case, a 65-year-old woman who is a relative of the country's first patient. The first patient, a 40-year-old man who had traveled from Congo, died on Oct. 5.

The newly confirmed patient had been in quarantine since Oct. 6 as a known contact of the deceased man. She developed symptoms before testing positive and has since been transferred to an Infectious Disease Unit. The ministry stated there is currently no evidence of community transmission, as all identified cases are linked to the initial patient and have been managed in quarantine.

Separately, a second patient, a 39-year-old man from the same family, remains in stable condition. The ministry has yet to trace three other contacts linked to Kenya's first case.

Ebola is highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials. Congo is currently experiencing its deadliest Ebola outbreak, with at least 4,000 deaths since May.

Health officials are urging communities to be transparent about potential exposures and travel history to ensure early detection, which can increase survival rates. Kenya has enhanced screening measures at border crossings nationwide, including at Nairobi's main airport for flights arriving from 10 countries identified as outbreak centers. Enhanced screening procedures, such as hand washing and temperature checks, have also been observed at the Busia border crossing with Uganda. However, concerns persist among residents regarding illegal border crossings, potentially bypassing screening measures.
