Kazakhstan Detains Senior Officials After 14 Service Members Drown
Senior military officials have been detained in Kazakhstan following the deaths of 14 service members during naval exercises in the Caspian Sea.
Five senior military officials have been detained in Kazakhstan after 14 service members died when they were swept into the Caspian Sea during military exercises. The incident occurred Thursday as the group was disembarking from a boat during a combat training mission.
Officials stated that a sharp deterioration in meteorological conditions and increasing winds caused the group of 17 to be swept into the sea. Three individuals were rescued.
Those detained include the chief of staff and first deputy commander of Kazakhstan's Naval Forces, two military unit commanders, and the commanders of a marine company and a boat. They are suspected of criminal negligence. A pretrial investigation into the deaths is underway, focusing on the decisions made during the organization and execution of the exercise, adherence to safety requirements, consideration of weather conditions, and the technical specifications of the boat.
The incident took place approximately 43 kilometers (27 miles) southwest of Aktau, a city in Kazakhstan. The Kazakh Ministry of Defense reported that over 500 military personnel, warships, and coastal units were participating in the Caspian Defense 2026 military exercise at the time of the incident.
