The charred and beaten remains of Luigi “Luca” Esposito, a 53-year-old Italian sports journalist, were found on a rural farm in Eboli, in the southern province of Salerno, on Sunday. Firefighters discovered the body while extinguishing a blaze, according to local reports.
Despite the extensive burns, Esposito's body showed evidence of multiple fractures to his face, ribs, and pelvis. Bullet shell casings were also found near the scene. A definitive cause of death is pending further examination by a coroner.
Esposito was the editor-in-chief of the soccer news site TuttoSalernitana.com and also worked as a television sports commentator. He was also employed by the Regional Environmental Agency.
Authorities found Esposito's keys in his pocket and his vehicle abandoned and locked nearby, suggesting he may have left the car voluntarily before his death. Security footage captured Esposito with another individual near the farmland hours before his remains were discovered.
The Salerno Public Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation into the incident. Organizations including the Committee to Protect Journalists and the European Federation of Journalists have urged Italian authorities to explore whether Esposito’s work was connected to his death. Attila Mong, CPJ’s Europe representative, stated that authorities must act quickly and transparently to establish the full circumstances of the case.
