Istanbul Rainfall Claims Two Lives Amidst Historic Flooding
The city experiences its heaviest rainfall in 84 years, leading to widespread disruption and two fatalities.
Two people have died in Istanbul following severe flooding caused by the heaviest rainfall in 84 years, according to the city's governor. The deluge has resulted in widespread disruption, with nearly 600 people rescued from stranded situations and numerous vehicles submerged.
One victim, a 14-year-old boy, was electrocuted after stepping into a puddle. A 34-year-old man died after slipping and hitting his head on the pavement while attempting to cross a flooded road. City officials are investigating the teen's death.
Some areas of Istanbul received rainfall equivalent to one-seventh of the annual average within a short period. In response to the extreme weather, schools were ordered to close on Thursday and Friday, with authorities anticipating continued rain. The city's deputy mayor reported that 595 people had been evacuated to safety, and over 8,000 workers were involved in flood response efforts.
Residents have been advised to stay home unless absolutely necessary, and public transportation has been encouraged over private vehicles. The city's metro service extended its operating hours until 2 AM local time.
The extreme weather also impacted air travel, with 46 flights unable to land at Istanbul's airports. Flooding occurred in a shopping center car park in the Sariyer district, submerging multiple vehicles. Road collapses were reported in other areas, and a river breached its banks.
In addition to the immediate emergency response, administrative leave was granted on Thursday to employees with disabilities, pregnant individuals, and veterans, provided they were not in essential services like health, safety, or rainwater drainage. Women in the public sector with children under eight years old also received leave.
The Istanbul metropolitan area is home to over 16 million residents. The interior ministry has issued warnings of potential flash flooding in several other provinces as well.
