India Floods: At Least 62 Dead in Northern State
Heavy rainfall causes widespread damage and displacement in Uttar Pradesh, with more than 1,000 homes affected.
At least 62 people have died following days of heavy rain and flooding in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state, officials confirmed on Monday. The downpour has also resulted in 46 injuries and damage to over 1,000 homes.
In response to the severe weather, schools were closed in several districts, including the state capital Lucknow. Rescue teams have been deployed to evacuate residents from flooded areas to safer locations. Authorities have advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel through waterlogged regions and to stay clear of fast-flowing rivers, streams, and drains.
According to Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow, the intensity of the rainfall was expected to decrease from Monday as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal weakened. Light rain may persist in eastern and western parts of the state through Tuesday.
Flooding has also impacted the eastern state of Odisha, where officials reported that more than 75,000 people have been evacuated. In neighboring Nepal, 21 fatalities were reported due to weather-related incidents between Thursday and Sunday, with five people still missing and five injured. The country’s disaster management agency stated that floods and landslides had damaged 194 houses in Nepal.
