Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, died on Monday while undergoing treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar, the nation's vice president announced.
Hassan, who became Tanzania's first gentleman in 2021 when his wife assumed office as the country's first female president following the death of John Magufuli, had been receiving care for his heart condition. Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed Hassan's death and conveyed condolences to the family. Arrangements are underway for his burial in Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous archipelago that is part of Tanzania.
The couple had four children, including a daughter who serves as a lawmaker. Kenyan President William Ruto and Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye both extended condolences to President Hassan and the people of Tanzania.
President Hassan is currently serving her second term, having secured over 97% of the vote in a 2025 election where candidates from the two main opposition parties were reportedly barred from participating.
