Hurricane Trudy Approaches Mexico Coast; Typhoon Champi Threatens Guam

Hurricane Trudy is churning toward Mexico's southwestern and west-central Pacific coast and is forecast to continue strengthening through Saturday. Forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm's center was expected to approach the coast Saturday and pass near it into Sunday.

A hurricane warning is in effect from Manzanillo in the Mexican state of Colima to Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco. On Friday night, Trudy was classified as a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph).

Trudy was located approximately 240 miles (385 kilometers) west-southwest of Acapulco in Guerrero state and about 215 miles (345 kilometers) south-southeast of Manzanillo. The storm is moving northwest at 8 mph (13 kph).

The Mexican navy has alerted maritime communities and coastal residents to exercise extreme caution due to anticipated high waves, heavy rainfall, and the potential for rising river levels, flooding, and landslides in susceptible areas. While the state of Colima reported low current risks, the hurricane could bring significant rainfall. This precipitation may have damaging effects given the already saturated ground from previous storms that have impacted the Pacific coast.

Trudy is projected to produce 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm) of rain across the region through the weekend, with isolated areas possibly receiving up to 15 inches.

Meanwhile, in the Pacific, Typhoon Champi is intensifying and moving westward toward Guam. According to the U.S. Weather Service and the U.S. Navy's Meteorology and Oceanography Command, Champi's maximum sustained winds have increased to 100 mph (160 kph) as it travels at 15 mph (23 kph).

Guam and Rota are under a typhoon warning, while Tinian, Saipan, and surrounding areas are under a tropical storm warning.
