Gunmen opened fire inside a church in the Jordanian city of Karak on Friday, killing six people and wounding 28, according to a government spokesperson. The attack occurred at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, a city located approximately 110 miles south of the capital, Amman.
Authorities are investigating the incident. Karak is known to be home to a Christian minority population.
This is not the first security incident in Karak. In 2016, a series of attacks in the area, including one at a Crusader castle popular with tourists, resulted in the deaths of 10 people, seven of whom were officers. Dozens were wounded in those attacks before security forces killed the gunmen after a prolonged standoff.
