At least 30 people have been killed and 22 injured when a large mound of rubbish collapsed onto nearby homes in Guinea's capital, Conakry, officials announced. The disaster occurred around 2 a.m. local time in the Dar-es-Salam area following heavy rainfall.

Government officials stated that "significant" resources and personnel, including the military, have been deployed to search for survivors amidst the debris. Rescuers were seen using excavators to sift through the scattered waste.

One woman reported that her five children died in the collapse, and authorities fear the death toll may increase. Guinea's Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah visited the site to assess the situation and oversee rescue operations. A neighborhood leader told AFP news agency that 18 bodies had been recovered by the time of his statement. This is not the first fatal incident at the waste site; a previous landslide there in 2017 resulted in 10 deaths.
