A Greek air force jet crashed Saturday during an aerial show north of Athens, creating a large fire visible to thousands of spectators. The twin-seat Phantom F4 jet went down during a low-altitude maneuver at the Tanagra air force base, approximately 40 miles north of the capital.

There were no reported injuries among the attendees at Athens Flying Week, an annual air show. However, the status of the two airmen aboard the jet was not immediately confirmed by air force officials. Rescue operations were reportedly hampered by the fire on the base grounds.

Firefighting efforts involved eleven water-dropping planes and helicopters, supported by 85 firefighters. They worked to contain the blaze, which remained at a distance from the viewing area.
