Flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border were caused by a glacial collapse, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The disintegration of a glacier or part of one led to the disaster, which has resulted in at least 270 fatalities and left more than 800 individuals missing.
Initial reports had suggested an earthquake might have been the cause of the devastating floods. The specific reason for the glacial collapse remains undetermined. However, scientists have previously warned that rising global temperatures and ongoing climate change are causing Himalayan glaciers to melt at an increasing pace.
