A trial stemming from the 2018 collapse of Genoa's Morandi bridge has concluded with 32 convictions, including that of Giovanni Castellucci, the former CEO of Italy's motorway operator. Castellucci was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
The collapse occurred in August 2018 during a heavy rainstorm, sending cars and trucks plummeting to the ground below. The disaster claimed the lives of 43 people.
Castellucci is already serving a six-year sentence for a separate road disaster in 2013. Another high-ranking official from the motorway company, Michele Donferri Mitelli, received an 11-year jail term.
The trial involved more than 50 defendants and has been a lengthy process following the catastrophic event that occurred during the peak of Italy's holiday season.
