All flights at Gatwick Airport were temporarily grounded on September 4, 2026, after a Boeing 787 aircraft experienced a technical issue, forcing a runway closure.
The aircraft reportedly became stuck on the runway due to a problem with its landing gear, leading to widespread travel disruption for thousands of passengers. Airport staff are working to remove the plane and resume operations as quickly as possible.
A spokesperson for London Gatwick confirmed the runway closure, stating, "Due to a technical issue with a departing aircraft, our runway is currently closed. Our teams are working to move the aircraft and resume operations as quickly as possible. As always, safety and security is our number one priority."
Passengers were advised to still travel to the airport and check their airline's online resources for updates. Some travelers experienced diversions; one passenger returning from the Isle of Man, who had recently undergone surgery, reported their flight was diverted to Luton Airport.
This incident follows a previous disruption at Gatwick in July when a water supply issue left passengers without running water for several hours.
