French Students Protest Overcrowding and Staff Shortages, Leading to Arrests
Hundreds of students across France blocked schools and demonstrated on Tuesday, resulting in over 400 arrests and dozens of injuries to law enforcement.
Over 400 individuals, predominantly minors, were arrested in France on Tuesday as a wave of student protests swept across the country. The demonstrations, which saw schools blockaded, also resulted in injuries to 48 law enforcement officers, according to the French interior minister Laurent Nuñez.
The movement, primarily involving students in the final years of secondary education known as lycées, began last week in the Île-de-France region surrounding Paris. Students are raising concerns over issues such as overcrowded classrooms and a lack of teachers.
The French education ministry reported that approximately 400 schools experienced protests or disruptions on Tuesday. The protests coincided with demonstrations by public sector workers, including teachers and firefighters, who were protesting against planned budget cuts.
