French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu was met with protests during a visit to a region devastated by wildfires, as Europe grappled with a series of escalating blazes.
Approximately 200 residents gathered at the town hall in Le Porge, located in the southwestern Gironde region, where 183 homes were destroyed. Organizers accused the prime minister of avoiding direct engagement with affected residents. Lecornu's office, however, stated that it has "nothing to hide" regarding the conduct of fire operations, according to AFP.
To aid the recovery efforts, Lecornu announced €12 million (approximately £10.3 million) in financial assistance for the Gironde and Landes regions. Of this total, €10 million will be allocated to Gironde and €2 million to Landes, intended to facilitate immediate project launches and the development of a recovery plan. Additionally, building permits for the reconstruction of destroyed homes are expected to be issued within a month, or possibly sooner.
Ludivine Daurignac, who organized a group of affected residents, told reporters that they intend to file complaints seeking "truth, transparency, and justice." She claimed that access to the prime minister was blocked, stating, "We were met by lines of riot police blocking our access."
Another local resident questioned the management of the fires, asking France's BFM outlet, "We would like to know why the fire was managed this way. Why all the firefighters who were on site left to defend the tip of Ferret, while only the volunteer firefighters remained."
In July, tens of thousands of people were evacuated from the Cap Ferret peninsula, a popular tourist destination west of Bordeaux, as wildfires spread across the Gironde department.
Firefighters across Europe have been contending with numerous wildfires over the weekend. In Belgium, emergency services spent a fourth consecutive day battling flames in Hautes Fagnes, the country's largest nature reserve. The European Union has also deployed assistance to Belgium and Spain to help combat the escalating crisis.
