France Imposes Curfews to Quell Riots, Sees Quieter Night
Targeted restrictions across multiple cities contributed to a reduction in violence, according to the Prime Minister.
Targeted curfews across France contributed to a quieter night following a weekend of riots and looting, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated. The measures were implemented in several French cities, including parts of Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, Lyon, and Lille.
In Paris, curfews were introduced in central areas such as Place de la République and the Les Halles shopping district. Other restrictions on the movement of young people and public gatherings were enacted in southern cities like Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, and Lyon, as well as in northern towns including Lille.
Lecornu acknowledged the efforts of police and gendarmes in enforcing these measures. He indicated that decisions regarding further curfews for Tuesday night would be made based on the necessity in specific regions, with input from local mayors and regional authorities. The prime minister emphasized that these decisions would be made "on the ground."
