Four Killed in Helicopter Crash Near Montreal
Authorities are investigating the incident that occurred Saturday afternoon in Sainte-Brigide-d'Iberville.
Four people died when a helicopter crashed and caught fire in Sainte-Brigide-d'Iberville, a town approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Montreal. Emergency services responded to the scene shortly after 2:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, where they found the aircraft engulfed in flames and confirmed the occupants were deceased.
The victims have not yet been identified, according to Sergeant Audrey-Anne Bilodeau of the Sûreté du Québec, the provincial police force. The aircraft has been described as a private helicopter. The process of identifying the deceased may take several days.
The Sûreté du Québec's Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation into the crash, with assistance from crime scene technicians and investigators from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. Police were initially alerted by an emergency call reporting a helicopter in distress that may have crashed and ignited.
The crash site is located near the Rang des Écossais road, adjacent to Highway 10. Firefighters had brought the blaze under control by approximately 3:30 p.m. local time, although officials remained at the scene working throughout the afternoon and into the evening.
