A jury found former Irish national swimming coach George Gibney guilty of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape against four young female athletes. The offenses occurred in the 1970s and 1980s.
Gibney, 77, had been charged with 79 counts but pleaded guilty to five at the start of the trial. The jury deliberated for more than seven hours before delivering its verdict on Monday afternoon at the Central Criminal Court. The jury was directed to return not guilty verdicts on 33 counts relating to two complainants.
Following the verdicts, the women who accused Gibney embraced their supporters and gardaí. Gibney was remanded in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on July 29.
