Five Northern African Lion Cubs Make Debut at UK Zoo
New additions to Whipsnade Zoo, named after characters from The Lion King, explore their outdoor enclosure for the first time.
Five rare Northern African lion cubs have taken their first steps into their outdoor enclosure at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, England. The cubs, born in June 2026, are now strong and curious enough to explore their new environment under the watchful eye of their mother, Waka.
The litter consists of three males—Mufasa, Pumbaa, and Rafiki—and two females, Sarabi and Shenzi, all named after characters from Disney's The Lion King. They spent their first five weeks in the den before venturing out to discover their larger home.
Sarah McGregor, predators section manager at Whipsnade Zoo, noted the cubs' increasing confidence. "It's been wonderful to see these five little cubs grow in confidence over the last few weeks," McGregor said. "They're now at the age where they are very curious and they're keen to investigate everything around them."
The Northern African lion is a rare subspecies facing significant threats in the wild. These cubs are part of an international conservation breeding program aimed at safeguarding the genetic lineage of the species.
