Five people were hospitalized following three pre-dawn firebomb attacks in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki that targeted residences of members of the governing conservative New Democracy party. The attacks, which occurred between 4 a.m. and 4:45 a.m. Wednesday, involved crude explosive devices constructed with camping gas canisters outside apartment buildings.
The injuries, all sustained during the final attack, resulted from cars and motorcycles being set ablaze. One of the targeted vehicles reportedly belonged to a parliamentary candidate for the New Democracy party. The candidate suffered burns, and her mother was hospitalized in intensive care with burns. Three other residents of the apartment building were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Firebomb attacks against symbols of authority, including politicians and police, are not uncommon in Greece and are often carried out by shadowy militant groups. While most such incidents result in property damage rather than injuries, previous attacks have caused harm. In July 2025, a bomb detonated outside the Thessaloniki home of the president of Greece’s association of prison guards, injuring two bystanders with shattered glass. In June 2024, a police officer guarding the home of a high-ranking judge in Athens was injured in a gasoline bomb attack.
