Five Arrested in France in Connection with Renoir Museum Theft

French authorities have arrested at least five individuals in connection with the theft of two paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, a suburb of Nice. The two suspected burglars are reportedly among those apprehended.

The two missing artworks, "Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano" (1910) and "Jeune fille au puits" (1886), have not yet been recovered. The thieves abandoned two other works as they fled the scene. Local media, including Nice-Matin, first reported the arrests, with some outlets suggesting the number of those detained could be six and that the suspects may be part of an organized criminal gang. Prosecutors have not yet confirmed the arrests.

The heist occurred on September 8, when the suspects allegedly cut through a fence to access the museum grounds at dawn. They then smashed a window to gain entry and used an electric saw to remove the paintings from their mountings.

The Renoir Museum, which opened in 1960, was the artist's final home before his death in 1919. It houses 12 of his artworks and displays personal items such as his easel, wheelchair, photographs, and letters.

This incident follows a series of high-profile art thefts across Europe in recent months, raising concerns about museum and gallery security. In August, paintings by Renoir, Paul Cézanne, and Henri Matisse were stolen from a museum in Italy but were later recovered. Last October, France's crown jewels were stolen from the Louvre in Paris by individuals disguised as construction workers, prompting criticism of the museum's security investments.
