Fire Damages Hitler's Eagle's Nest Retreat in German Alps

A fire broke out at the Eagle's Nest, a mountain retreat built for Adolf Hitler in the Bavarian Alps, with firefighting efforts still underway on Saturday. Authorities have detained one individual in connection with the blaze, which has significantly damaged the building.

The fire alarm at the Kehlsteinhaus, located in the Berchtesgaden district, was activated around 9:15 p.m. on Friday. Firefighters approaching the site, situated at an altitude of 1,834 meters (6,017 feet), could see flames. Access to the remote location, perched on a cliff, proved difficult for emergency services, and extinguishing the fire was ongoing Saturday morning. Firefighters reported no one was inside the building at the time and, based on current information, no injuries are believed to have occurred.

The Kehlsteinhaus was completed in 1938 and is typically accessible to the public via an elevator from the end of a winding mountain road and through tunnels. Since 1952, the building has operated as a cafe and restaurant and also houses an exhibition detailing its history. It was not open to visitors on Friday prior to the fire.

The extent to which the building's structure can be preserved remains unclear, according to the local tourism authority. Police have detained a person as a potential suspect, but their involvement in the fire has not yet been determined.
