A ferry carrying 100 passengers collided head-on with a cargo ship in the port of Souda, Crete, on Tuesday. Footage of the incident shows the two vessels approaching each other, with at least one heard blaring its horn.
A loud crunch was audible as the ferry's bow impacted the port side of the cargo ship. Following the collision, police sirens were heard, and the cargo vessel was seen moving backward. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew of either vessel.
The ferry, identified by local media as Elyros, was transporting 100 passengers, 32 cars, and 74 trucks. The cargo ship, named Iosif K., was carrying 84 trucks.
Both vessels have been grounded at the port while an investigation into the collision takes place. Neither ship will be permitted to sail until marine authorities have inspected them and issued a seaworthiness certificate.
Separately, in an unrelated incident days prior, a British tourist was found dead on a cruise ship off the coast of Crete. The 79-year-old man was discovered unresponsive on deck and, despite receiving first aid, later died at the hospital. The cruise ship docked on the Greek island following the event. The Chania Port Authority is conducting a preliminary investigation into the death and has ordered an autopsy.
