Families Search for Missing After Deadly Spain Train Collision
At least 69 killed and dozens injured when two high-speed trains crashed in central Spain; emergency services continue search efforts.
Families continued their desperate search for missing loved ones more than 24 hours after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain, a crash that has killed at least 69 people and injured dozens more.
One survivor, César Vicente, traveled from Seville to Toledo in search of his father, who was reportedly on the RENFE train that struck another operated by the private company Iryo. The Iryo train had stopped on the tracks when the collision occurred.
"I have my father, and I don’t know where he is. I hope to find him, oh my Lord," Vicente said. "I don’t want this to happen to anyone. This is unbearable. This is hell."
Relatives and friends flooded social media with appeals for information, posting photos and sharing details about the clothing or seat numbers of those on board the trains bound for Seville.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the government is working to support the victims' families, investigate the cause of the tragedy, and enhance security measures.
This incident marks the second deadly high-speed rail disaster in Spain this year. In January, 46 people died in southern Spain when a train derailed and collided with another.
The collision occurred in Urda, a small town south of Madrid. Residents mobilized quickly to assist the injured and provide support to unaffected passengers, with some transporting people from the tracks to a nearby sports pavilion.
Authorities issued a call for blood donations due to the high number of injured, with over 1,800 people volunteering in the Castilla-La Mancha region alone. The region's president expressed gratitude to the blood donors and the approximately 1,300 emergency service personnel deployed to the scene.
Spain's high-speed rail network, the second-largest in the world after China's, has been a significant infrastructure achievement. Prior to this year, it had not experienced a fatal crash in over three decades of operation.
