Explosive devices detonated in Syria's capital, Damascus, on Tuesday near a hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron was reportedly slated to stay, according to a security source. Roads in the vicinity were sealed off, and enhanced security measures were implemented following the blasts.

A Reuters witness reported hearing explosions in the area, and smoke was observed rising above buildings.

Macron's visit marks the first time a major European Union leader has visited Damascus since Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was toppled.
