Brits considering a move abroad in 2027 are being advised to look at a variety of international destinations, with experts highlighting factors such as sunshine, safety, cost of living, and quality of life as primary motivators.

Warmer climates, improved work-life balance, and the opportunity for a fresh start are significant draws for Britons contemplating emigration, especially as autumn approaches. A report by ECA International, which advises multinational organizations on international mobility, suggests that familiar European locations remain popular due to ease of adaptation.

Dublin, Ireland, is cited as an accessible option for those moving from the UK. Neil Ashman, analytics manager at ECA International, noted the minimal linguistic and cultural adjustments required, along with the city's proximity to home and its status as a major European capital with robust infrastructure. ECA International assesses living conditions in over 500 global locations to aid employers in understanding expatriate adaptation.

Copenhagen, Denmark, also received a recommendation, ranking second in ECA's assessment. Ashman highlighted its picturesque setting, high quality of life, excellent amenities, safety, reliable infrastructure, low pollution, and stable social and political conditions. The ECA rankings evaluate factors influencing adaptation, including personal safety, healthcare, infrastructure, pollution, political stability, language, culture, and climate.

Southern European and Distant Options

Greece has emerged as a highly sought-after destination, particularly for retirees and digital nomads. Federica Grazi, founder of Mitos Relocation, pointed to attractive tax incentives, such as a 50% income tax discount for new workers and a 7% flat tax on foreign income for retirees. Despite recent cost increases, the cost of living remains competitive, with rental costs estimated to be nearly 60% lower than in the UK. Greece also offers diverse residence permits, including a golden visa tied to real estate investment, and has a high level of English proficiency.

Spain is another popular choice, praised for its well-established expatriate community and support for non-Spanish speakers. Caroline Lips, head of marketing at Staysure Expat, noted the country's rich culture, appealing landscapes, and year-round sunshine. For retirees, pensions often extend further, enabling an active lifestyle. Families are drawn to Spain's safety, family-friendly environment, and international schools. Portugal has seen a significant increase in British expatriates, partly due to its cost of living being approximately 27% lower than in the UK. It has been recognized as a top retirement destination. William Cooper of William Russell, an expat insurance firm, highlighted the widespread use of English and the favorable currency exchange rates. Portugal appeals to both working professionals and retirees with its cities like Porto and Lisbon, and the more relaxed Algarve coast, though newcomers may encounter issues with overcrowding and bureaucracy.
