European Islands Offer Warm Autumn and Winter Escapes for Sun-Seekers

As summer gives way to autumn and winter, numerous European islands continue to offer warm weather and a respite from colder climates. These destinations provide opportunities for sunshine and outdoor activities long after the peak tourist season has ended.

Autumn Warmth in the Mediterranean and Beyond

Islands like Ibiza, Sicily, Mallorca, Gozo, Alonissos, and Brač offer mild temperatures suitable for exploring their attractions without the intense summer heat and crowds. Ibiza, known for its summer party scene, becomes a more relaxed destination in autumn, with average temperatures around 20C (68F) and occasional peaks of 25C (77F). For a quieter experience, the northern part of the island, including San Juan, offers a rustic feel and local markets.

Sicily in October can still experience temperatures around 29C (84F), making it ideal for visiting its historic piazzas and coastline. The northern coastal village of Cefalù is noted for its Norman cathedral and medieval old town. Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, averages 19C (66F) in October. Beyond its beaches, visitors can experience harvest season celebrations and explore rural towns. The mountain settlement of Valldemossa offers scenic views and historical sites like the Palace of King Sancho.

Gozo, Malta's quieter sister island, sees temperatures around 21C (70F) in October, with current readings reaching 29C (84F). Ramla Bay is highlighted as a prime beach destination. The lesser-known Greek island of Alonissos, currently around 24C (75F), offers stunning coastal views from its hilltop old town, Alonissos Old Town.

In Croatia, the island of Brač offers autumn temperatures between 14C (57F) and 20C (68F). Its famous Zlatni Rat beach, also known as the Golden Horn, is a unique pebbled shore whose shape changes with the tides.

Winter Sun Destinations

Tenerife remains a popular choice for winter sun, with southern Tenerife experiencing temperatures between 17C (63F) and 22C (72F) in December. Playa del Duque in Costa Adeje is a family-friendly beach that is less crowded in the winter months.

Gran Canaria also offers mild winter weather, with December temperatures similar to Tenerife. For a more authentic experience, the eastern towns of Agüimes and Ingenio are recommended. Agüimes features bronze statues throughout its streets, while Ingenio is known for its lacework and historic Church of La Candelaria.

The Portuguese island of Madeira provides a climate of 15C (59F) to 20C (68F) in December, offering a mix of sunshine and occasional rain. The island's lush landscape is ideal for walking, and the Achadas da Cruz cable car provides scenic views of the north coast. Achadas da Cruz cable car in Madeira

Cyprus sees mild temperatures around 14C (57F) in December, making it a destination for those seeking a cooler, yet still pleasant, climate. The mountain village of Pelendri in the Limassol District offers traditional Cypriot food and historic stone buildings. The Azores, a Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic, average around 17C (63F) in December. São Miguel is the largest and most popular island, featuring volcanic landscapes and black sand shores. Terceira offers a less crowded experience with lava ocean pools. Pelendri village in Cyprus
