Elon Musk urged support for mixed martial artist Conor McGregor’s bid for the presidency of Ireland and criticized the country’s government after reports that the ruling party had moved to block independent candidates from being nominated.

Musk posted on X that Simon Harris, Ireland’s prime minister and leader of Fine Gael, had “tyrannically” blocked the will of the Irish people and added, “Conor McGregor for President to save Ireland.” Irish news outlets reported that Harris had instructed Fine Gael councilors to oppose nominating independents such as McGregor, a move that would make it harder for the fighter-turned-candidate to appear on the presidential ballot.

McGregor has sought to rally public support for a ballot position through an online petition. He wrote in March that he intended to run and urged people to sign a petition seeking to alter Ireland’s nomination rules so his name could be included. Current law requires a presidential candidate to secure nominations from either 20 members of the Oireachtas or four county councils.

"This system, while intended to ensure a degree of political influence among candidates, inadvertently restricts the direct voice of the Irish electorate," McGregor wrote in the petition, according to his posts. "I propose a petition advocating for a modification of the nomination process to allow my name be included on the ballot. I contend that the citizens of Ireland, both at home and abroad, should have the unhindered right to determine the candidates who appear on the presidential ballot."

Irish officials have said Fine Gael councilors were directed not to nominate independents such as McGregor, a move party leaders framed as preserving established nomination procedures. Party officials have not publicly endorsed McGregor’s candidacy, and Harris’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

McGregor has used public platforms to attack the government and to set out policy positions. In March he criticized a bill related to the EU migration pact, saying Ireland must fully implement the pact by June 12, 2026, and urging opposition to related legislation. "Who else will stand up to Government and oppose this bill?… I will!" he wrote in one social-media post.

The UFC fighter’s political outreach has included appearances and meetings abroad. He visited the White House and met with former President Donald Trump; he also spoke to reporters in the White House briefing room in March. A White House aide was present during that media encounter, U.S. photos show.

Musk and McGregor spoke by FaceTime earlier this week, McGregor and social posts indicate. Musk’s public comments on X were among the most visible endorsements so far, though he framed them as criticism of Harris’s actions rather than a formal campaign endorsement.

Conor McGregor

McGregor has not fought since suffering a broken leg against Dustin Poirier in 2021 and later missed a scheduled return because of a toe injury. He has said he would consider returning to competition only in stadium events and has expressed interest in a UFC event at the White House. His public profile as a multitime champion and his international visibility have helped drive attention to his suggested political ambitions.

Under Ireland’s presidential nomination rules, a candidate without party backing typically must secure support from either a substantial number of national legislators or a smaller number of county councils. That threshold has at times been criticized as a barrier to independent or outsider candidates.

McGregor teased a possible presidential run last September and formally announced his campaign activity shortly after his visit to the White House. His petition and social-media appeals aim to persuade voters and to place pressure on local officials and lawmakers to permit his inclusion on the presidential ballot.

It remained unclear how many signatures McGregor’s petition had gathered or whether any county councils would break ranks with Fine Gael’s instruction. Political analysts and party officials have noted that while high-profile endorsements and media attention can raise a candidacy’s profile, formal nominations and legal requirements determine ballot access.

No official election timetable was announced in connection with McGregor’s statements, and Irish authorities set election dates through constitutional and statutory procedures. Officials in Dublin have not indicated any changes to nomination law in response to McGregor’s petition or Musk’s public comments.

As the discussion continued on social media and in Irish political circles, McGregor’s campaign materials framed his bid as an effort to give citizens "the unhindered right to determine the candidates who appear on the presidential ballot." Musk’s intervention and the Fine Gael directive have intensified debate over how easily outsiders can access Ireland’s highest office.
