Eleven Killed in South African Mass Shooting
Gunmen opened fire on a group of people at a house near Durban, killing 10 at the scene and one who later died in hospital.
At least 11 people were killed and one person died from injuries after gunmen stormed a house in the KwaMakhutha township near Durban, South Africa, on Tuesday night. Police reported that the attackers opened fire on 14 people inside the residence. Ten victims died at the scene, and four were taken to a hospital, where one succumbed to their wounds.
Among the deceased is a woman who was believed to be pregnant. Police stated that some of the victims were allegedly involved in illegal activities, the specifics of which cannot be disclosed at this time to protect ongoing investigations. While the motive remains unconfirmed, authorities have not ruled out a possible dispute between rival groups.
Information gathered suggests that 13 men and one woman were present at a gathering when three individuals arrived and initiated the shooting. After the attack, the assailants reportedly set fire to a vehicle belonging to one of the victims before fleeing the scene.
South Africa has one of the highest murder rates globally, with official data indicating an average of more than 60 homicides per day. Recent weeks have seen heightened public concern following the discovery of at least nine murdered women, with some bodies found discarded along roadsides. Last year, a mass shooting at a Johannesburg tavern resulted in the deaths of nine people.
