Jacobus 'John' Bakkum, 85, died in a Melbourne hospital on Thursday, two days after he was discovered in his vehicle which had gone down an embankment in Victoria's High Country. Bakkum had been last seen by his wife, Mary, on Sunday night at the Harrietville Hotel. Their routine was for Ms. Bakkum to walk home while Mr. Bakkum drove their 2007 silver Toyota Prado the short distance. He failed to arrive home, prompting concern as it was uncharacteristic for him to drive long distances alone.
CCTV footage showed Bakkum's vehicle traveling through Omeo, approximately 85 kilometers from his home, nearly two hours after he was last seen. His family raised the alarm, initiating a large-scale police search. On Tuesday morning, a passing motorist found Bakkum trapped in his car off the Omeo Highway at Mitta Mitta, about 150 kilometers from his residence.
Emergency responders conducted a high-angle rescue to free Bakkum from the vehicle. He was transported to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was reunited with his family. His wife expressed gratitude on social media to all who assisted in the search and for the support received.
Victoria Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the possibility of a medical episode. A police statement indicated the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, has relevant footage, or any information to contact Crime Stoppers.
Mr. Bakkum was remembered as a significant figure in the Harrietville and Alpine communities. His contributions were recognized by the local council in 2011. His nephew, Trevor Castricum, described him as an active member involved in numerous local organizations, including school committees, the hall committee, and the historical committee. He also served as captain of the local fire brigade.
