Elderly Man Dies After Sun Lounger Dispute on Greek Beach

An 82-year-old man has died after a dispute over a sun lounger on a beach in Vouliagmeni, a seaside town near Athens. The man suffered a cardiac arrest following the scuffle on Sunday.

According to Greek media, the deceased and his wife arrived at the beach and occupied sunbeds. Shortly after, a 76-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman approached. An argument reportedly ensued, though it was initially not physical. The younger woman became unwell and was taken to a beachside clinic.

When the 76-year-old man returned to the sun loungers after accompanying the woman, a fight broke out. The 82-year-old man then experienced cardiac arrest. He received CPR and was transported to a hospital in the Voula suburb, where he died approximately one hour later. The 76-year-old man and his female companion were arrested following the incident.

A friend of the younger man told the Greek newspaper ProtoThema that the argument began over the sunbeds, with the 82-year-old reportedly stating, "Do you know who I am? I'm from the navy." The friend also stated that both the 76-year-old man and the 21-year-old woman sustained injuries.

A witness described hearing raised voices, followed by a fight involving "a man, another man, a woman." The witness also reported seeing CPR being administered to the victim.

Disputes over sun loungers have become more common in European tourist destinations in recent years, with reports of tourists reserving prime spots early in the morning or even overnight.
