Elderly Man Dies After Sun Lounger Dispute in Greece

An 82-year-old man has died in Greece after a dispute over a sun lounger escalated into a physical altercation. The incident occurred on Sunday in Vouliagmeni, a seaside town near Athens.

The elderly man reportedly suffered cardiac arrest following a scuffle with a 76-year-old man. He was given CPR at the scene and transported to a hospital in the Voula suburb, where he died approximately an hour later.

According to Greek media reports, the 76-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman who was with him were arrested following the death. The reports indicate that the 82-year-old man and his wife had occupied the sunbeds first when the younger man arrived with his companion. An argument ensued, which was not initially physical. The 21-year-old woman became unwell and was taken to a beachside clinic. When the 76-year-old man returned to the sun loungers after accompanying her, a fight broke out.

A friend of the arrested man told Greek newspaper ProtoThema that his friend had an argument with the 82-year-old, who allegedly said, "Do you know who I am? I'm from the navy." The friend also stated that both the 76-year-old man and the 21-year-old woman sustained injuries.

A witness described hearing shouting and witnessing a fight involving "a man, another man, a woman," and subsequently seeing CPR being administered. The witness also described hearing the woman's screams.

Disputes over sun loungers have become a recurring issue in tourist destinations across Europe. In recent years, reports have emerged of tourists attempting to reserve prime spots by sleeping on them overnight or arriving at pools hours before opening.
