Elderly Couple Dies in House Explosion After Gas Heater Mishap

An ex-coal miner and his wife, both in their 80s, were killed in a house explosion in Caerphilly, South Wales, on December 12 last year. The incident occurred when the couple, William Mumford, 90, and Marlene Mumford, 84, were attempting to fit a new gas cylinder to a portable heater.

Pub-goers at the nearby Tylers Arms, who knew the couple, alerted firefighters after spotting the blaze. Upon arrival, emergency services found the property engulfed in thick, black smoke and were initially unable to enter due to the extent of the damage.

An inquest at Gwent Coroner's Court heard that the fire likely ignited during the process of fitting the new gas cylinder. Assistant coroner Sarah Le Fevre stated that it is believed Mr. Mumford realized the fire had started and, unable to control it or the gas release, attempted to remove the cylinder from the house. This action, however, may have inadvertently spread the flames to other parts of the property.

The coroner concluded that the fire started accidentally due to a mechanical or connection failure with the portable gas heater and cylinder, resulting in an uncontrolled gas release. Both Mr. and Mrs. Mumford were pronounced dead at the scene, with their causes of death attributed to exposure to combustion products from the fire. The inquest formally recorded their deaths as accidental.
