Eithne Vallely, a prominent figure in the Irish traditional music scene and a dedicated educator, has died at the age of 81. Vallely, who was originally from County Donegal but had resided in Armagh for decades, was widely recognized for her significant contributions to the cultural and musical landscape of Ireland and beyond.
Friends and colleagues remembered Vallely as a "giant" of the traditional music scene. SDLP Councillor Thomas O'Hanlon described the news as "devastating," highlighting her "extraordinary contribution" over many decades. O'Hanlon, who worked with Vallely in recent years, also noted her exceptional patience, care, and encouragement when teaching young people.
Those who knew her spoke of her as a gifted teacher, an experienced administrator, and the Director of Music, but most importantly, as someone who generously gave of herself to others. Her legacy is expected to continue through the many musicians she inspired and taught.
Vallely is survived by her husband and children. Tributes have been offered to her family and all who had the pleasure of playing music with her or learning from her.
