Eight Women's Bodies Found Near Johannesburg Spark Fear and Investigation

South African police are investigating the discovery of eight women's bodies in the Kempton Park area, east of Johannesburg, over the last two months. The grim findings have intensified concerns about the country's high rates of femicide and violent crime.

Authorities are examining whether the cases are linked but have cautioned against immediate conclusions about a single perpetrator or serial killer. Gauteng provincial commissioner Fred Kekana stated that investigators are considering all possibilities, including multiple suspects or separate perpetrators, while comparing evidence, timelines, locations, victim profiles, and circumstances.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Kekana acknowledged that the similarities and proximity of the locations where the bodies were found are cause for concern. The bodies of the victims, all women between the ages of 20 and 38, were discovered either naked or partially clothed, with bruises indicating possible violence.

The first body was found on July 17, restrained with cable ties. A suspect, believed to be the victim's boyfriend, has been arrested and remains in custody. One identified victim is 38-year-old runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, who was reported missing after not returning from a jog and was found dead several days later.

The most recently recovered body, found in Olifantsfontein, was in an advanced stage of decomposition. The youngest victim identified was 20 years old.

These discoveries have fueled public outcry regarding the safety of women in South Africa. The country has some of the highest femicide rates globally, according to the United Nations. Crime statistics from April to July this year show an average of about 45 murders per day nationwide. A 2022 study indicated that over 35% of South African adult women have experienced physical or sexual violence.

In response to the ongoing investigation, police have offered a cash reward for any information related to the murders.
