Eight Orangutans Reunited With Borneo Forests After Wildfire Rescue

Eight orangutans, including three mothers with their offspring and two adult males, have been released back into a reserve in western Borneo, authorities announced Friday. The primates were taken into captivity during the summer when intense wildfires threatened their natural habitat.

International Animal Rescue Indonesia (Yiari) and the Indonesian forestry ministry confirmed the release. Indonesian authorities had rescued a total of 46 orangutans during August and September as fires swept through the region. While wildfires are a common occurrence during the dry season in Indonesia, this year's fires were particularly severe.

This year's intensified wildfires were partly attributed to the El Niño ocean warming phenomenon, which has led to more volatile weather patterns globally. The fires incinerated surrounding forests, severely limiting the orangutans' access to food and forcing them closer to human settlements.

Among the released orangutans was a family unit: Mama Nopi and her three young, Nopi, Naufal, and Nopan. They had been found surviving in a coconut and rubber plantation before their rescue in early September. Relocating these orangutans to a safer reserve was deemed a necessary step by Yiari CEO Karmele Llano Sanchez when their natural habitats became unsafe.

Orangutans are classified as critically endangered. Conservation group WWF estimates that approximately 104,000 orangutans remain in Borneo and Sumatra, a significant decline from an estimated 230,000 a century ago. The ongoing efforts to rescue, rehabilitate, and release orangutans are crucial for the survival of the species amid habitat loss and extreme weather events.
