A powerful earthquake, registered as 7.1 by Japanese seismologists and 6.8 by the U.S. Geological Survey, shook Japan, causing significant damage and widespread panic. Footage from inside a Costco store captured the moment shelves emptied, sending merchandise crashing to the floor as shoppers scrambled for safety.

The seismic event also caused a mall to crumble, a bridge to buckle, and the collapse of a paper factory chimney. Several homes were reportedly struck by the quake.
